I didn’t have a sense of smell for the first 31 years of my life so not only do I have a recent obsession with flowers due to my 31 years of ignorance, I know NOTHING about them. That’s why I was so excited to spend time with Nicola the owner of Flowermart at Leichhardt’s Norton Plaza. Flowermart is the third flower shop Nicola has owned but the first in Australia. Nicola hails from South Africa, she commenced her career in IT, marketing and advertising always had an interest in flowers. One day a great opportunity presented itself and she bought a florist! She worked hard to learn on the job and then five years ago she migrated to Australia and bought the long standing, well respected Flowermart at Norton Plaza.
I had so many questions.
I wanted to know her favourite flower (sweet peas and ranunculus’). Did people buy flowers more for scent or atheistic? Atheistic. What was more common – cut flowers or arrangements? Cut flowers. What was the most durable flower? Natives. No matter how novice my questions might have come across, Nicola was a delight and only happy to share her vast knowledge of flowers with me. I dream of Nicola’s home, filled with Chrysanthemums, Lillies, Hydrangeas but Nicola tells me she often forgets to take flowers home!
We get to the logistics, Flowermart delivers domestic and internationally! They do weddings, Christmas table décor, all the flowers for Sydney’s Boat Show and even the Australian Open! Everything in the shop is purchasable, candles, pots, decorative items even the furniture!
I left Flowermart with a lot more knowledge about flowers, snapped my favourite arrangments and found my new regular flower shop.
Check out Flowermart's website and order via email or call in and meet Nicola yourself!
