National Reconciliation Week

Grounded in Truth, Walk Together with Courage
Norton Plaza is again supporting National Reconciliation Week from 27 May to 3 June 2019.

National Reconciliation Week is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia. Reconciliation must live in the hearts, minds and actions of all Australians as we move forward, creating a nation strengthened by respectful relationships between the wider Australian community, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

National Reconciliation Week marks two important milestones in Australia’s reconciliation journey: the 1967 referendum and the historic Mabo decision*. It is also a time to acknowledge and reflect on Australia’s broader history, and to build on our efforts in achieving positive relationships between First Nations Australians and the broader Australian community.

  • *May 27 —  Represents Australia’s most successful referendum and a defining event in our nation’s history. The 1967 Referendum saw over 90 per cent of Australians vote to give the Commonwealth the power to make laws for First Nations peoples and recognise them in the national census.
  • 3 June – Commemorates the historic High Court of Australia’s Mabo judgement in 1992. This ruling legally recognised the special connection First Nations peoples have to the land, and overruled the invasion term ‘Terra Nullius’, meaning ‘Land belonging to no one’.  This recognition paved the way for land rights or Native Title.

Artist Molly Wallace created the artwork featured in our National Reconciliation Week campaign:
"I am a proud Kamilaroi women from a small town called Dungog and I have been interning through Career Trackers at GPT for two years. When I was asked if I would like to do a painting as a part of Norton Plaza's acknowledgement of National Reconciliation Week, I was so excited to be involved and able to express my love and respect for a week that is so important.

T
he theme this year of ‘Grounded in Truth Walk Together with Courage’ I tried to reflect in the grounding and connection that everything around us has. To convey the truth that nothing is truly separate and that we must come together in order to walk towards a brighter future."
